Jabba's Comments

Gordon McQueen's size marked him out for some sort of sporting success from an early age - though at school he started to follow in his father's footsteps by playing between the sticks. Father Tommy had played with Leeds' coach Les Cocker at Accrington and had also been understudy to Tom Younger while at Hibs. But he soon switched to playing in the outfield where his huge frame gave him an immediate advantage over most centre forwards. For whatever reason, Liverpool and Rangers failed to see his talent, but St Mirren did - and they were soon approached by Don Revie, looking to fill a soon-to-be-vacant slot currently occupied by the ageing Jack Charlton. At £30,000, it was to be sound business for Leeds, and McQueen soon established himself in the side and picked up the first of his 30 full caps for Scotland. He had been a key part of the 1974 Championship side, and it was a major shock when he left for Old Trafford along with Joe Jordan for a then-record fee of nearly half a million pounds.

After a brief spell coaching abroad, McQueen returned to the UK and managed Airdrie before falling out with the board over financial matters. More recently, he has been coaching at Middlesbrough, but the recent arrival of Steve Mclaren resulted in McQueen moving on.

Suzi says: My name is Suzi and my mum & Mr. McQueen dated when they were in their last years of school.

hi its suzi my mom dated Steve Mcqueen not gord. Sorry

Miss McQueen says: One of my friends told me that My dad was on ugly footballers.com so i thought i'd search his name on google. This web page came up first & thought it would be funny to post a message. I don't think these are very flattering pictures of him.

Stefan Arngrimsson says: I certainly saw Gordon McQueen play and the game has never seen a better header of a ball. Gordon was my favorite player and I was supposed to be introduced to him in 1982 at Akureyri airport in Iceland. Unfortunately the Man Utd. plane's arrival was delayd and my plane left on time, so I never met him. The thing was that when Gordon was at St Mirren his girlfriend was Wilson Humphries' daughter Helen. Ten years later she was my girlfriend. This is the reason for the planned introduction.

Have your say

Did you see Gordon McQueen play? Did you meet him in a pub, go to school with him, decorate his house or buy a motor from him? If you've got any comments or stories about Gordon McQueen on or off the pitch, just fill in the form below and (provided they're not blatantly libellous) I'll add them to this page.
