This competition is run for fans of Leeds United by a fan of Leeds United. It is not endorsed by or connected with Leeds United Association Football Club in any way.
As its name suggests, the Leeds United Predictions League is a competition to see who can most accurately predict the fortunes of Leeds United. It is run in association with the Unofficial Leeds United mailing list and the results are posted to that list.
The Predictions League serves 2 purposes - it's an interesting diversion that enables us to see just who the real pessimists and optimists are (the optimists did quite well last season), and it serves to keep 'prediction-only' mail away from the list and thus helps reduce the load on the main mailing list.
The winner of the Predictions League receives the Statto Shield, a suitably magnificent trophy donated by me and gets to keep, love and cherish it for 6 months or so, before they must then post it on to the next winner.
There will be two seasons of the Predictions League in the course of a normal football season. The first PL season runs from the start of the season in August through to the the end of December. The second PL season runs from the first game in the New Year through to the end of the season in May.
You don't have to be in at the start to enter (although that will obviously increase your chances of winning) - feel free to join the league at any time in the season.
To join the Predictions League, point your forms-capable WWW browser at /pl/JoinPL.html and fill in the relevant information there.
You can submit an entry for the Predictions League by: pointing your WWW browser at /pl/MakePrediction.html and fill in the relevant fields anytime before kick-off (I do check the mail path, so no sneaky late postings ;-). The results appear sometime after the final whistle: how long depends on how long it takes me to get back/whether I'm staying overnight in Leeds for a beer/whether I'm going to work in the morning etc..
You should receive an automated acknowledgement of your prediction some time after you post it (how long it takes depends on many things, but will rarely be more than 24 hours). If it indicates a problem with your prediction - or if you wish to change your prediction, just resend your entry.
If you've forgotten your password, want to change your name or email address, or just want to reconfirm what your predictions were, look at /pl/Account.html.
Points are scored as follows:
So, if Leeds won a game 2-1, here are some predictions and what they would score:
and for the crowd:
Here is a list of the average & highest gates (as at 14/10/2001):
In the event of a tie, the winner will be the person with the most fully correct score predictions. Failing that, the average score will be used to separate the two, then "result" points rather than "crowd" points (although if they finish on the same points, and neither missed a prediction I'll have to think of yet another way of doing it).
If you fail to enter for four successive games, your name will disappear from the results list, but you will retain the points you were awarded, so if you enter again, you'll get your original points back.
All PL-related posts to the list (mainly by me, but others may wish to raise the odd point) should have a Subject: line that starts "LUPL:" to make it easier for those who aren't interested to skip.
Any enquiries about the PL should be mailed to firstname.lastname@example.org - try to keep them off the Leeds list and out of the normal predictions inbox.
