Eddie Gray's first signing, Donnelly was a run-of-the-mill
midfielder who nevertheless won himself a place in the Leeds line-up,
but he found the veteran Peter Lorimer take his place when Lorimer
returned to Leeds at the end of 1983. He returned to Scotland and was
part of the Dunfermline squad that won promotion to the SPL in 1986,
but fell out with the club two years later and found himself sacked at
the end of the 1988 season.
John J. Donnelly says: Donnelly was always underated.
Richard Walker says: he was sick at the side of the pitch when sub
against Shrewsbury - so the story goes.
