Highly-rated as a youngster, but a case of potential unfulfilled? Gavin
managed to stay in the professional game for 16 years and clocked up nearly
400 appearances, so his career can't be regarded as a total failure, but
when Eddie Gray re-signed him after Allan Clarke had released him he might
have seen something of himself in the young winger. As it was, he made less
than 40 appearances in 3 seasons and travelled between a dozen or so clubs,
rarely staying in one place for much more than a year.

years, lived up to his Marko Van der Gavin nickname.
Anon says: Mark Gavin left Bolton way too early. Was one of the
better players of the dark days in 1987
Steve says: Mark Gavin currently helps to coach a junior team. His
son Tom plays for the team and is also a promising left winger. The
team won it's league last year without losing a game.
Alan Tonge says: Mark was a good lad. He was at Exeter City with me
in the early 1990's and was one of the fittest at the club, always
looking after himself and turning out consistent performances. Loved
horse racing and was always on his mobile phone to his contacts,
supplying the lads with usually good tips and sound information.
Tony Jacobs says: I saw him play at Bristol City during our
promotion season 1989/90 and I was very disappointed to see him go to
Watford. He was an excellent player on his day, we could do with
someone like him on the left wing these days perhaps then we would
have got promoted this year!
Gladys Prothero says: Probably one of the worst players I've seen
at Vicrage Road in over 30 years of following Watford. But fair play
to him - to play over 400 games he must have had something. Although
it never appeared at Watford!
