A pocket battleship of a centre-half, Jackie McGugan had made a good
impression at St Mirren and was in the Scottish U-23 side before moving
to Leeds. After just one game in 7 months - and several injuries - he
moved on to Tranmere for what was then a club record fee. He later
played non-league football in the south-east.

Eric McPhail says: Met Jack in Corfu in 1987. I remember him
telling me that he won a Scottish Cup Winners Medal with St.Mirren in
1959, and he got send home from international duty because of a 'late'
night, and his room-mate Denis Law didn't get back at all. He was a
publican when I met him. A really down to earth kind of guy.
