Villa Match - Mick Clements

An unsurprisingly subued crowd today, we had no real interest in singing, other than the occasional rabble-rousing from the North East corner! We survived a badly deflected shot hitting the post before Joachim's goal, for which JJ looked to have dragged Kelly down before racing clear onto Martyn to put the ball away. Martyn and most of team went mental with the ref but he wasn't interested and it did wonders for our mood.......as did the half time score at Anfield. Next week vs Arse is the third place play off it would seem.

Second half the lads were positive and created a lot of chances, but (guess what) piss-poor finishing ensued when it occasionally looked easier to score. Kewell actually grafted today, the highlight being when he won the ball on the edge of the area, barged through defenders to the near post, squaring it past James for Bridges who boomed it over from 5 yards - un-be-fucking-lievable. Poor MB was subbed 30 seconds later for Huckers. Kewell and McPhail had further second half chances, a half when we also had three free kicks on the left hand edge of the area (nice dive Harry), with Wilcox having a go, Harte closest - but the fact I caught the ball in the crowd from his best one tells its own story.

AVFC announced James as man of the match, he was spawny (esp. in first half gathering two spilled saves) and his goal led a somewhat charmed life today, which didn't have much to do with him.

Villa crowd were impeccable re. the one minute silence, as were AVFC - they laid two bunches of flower behind the goals in front of us just before kick off (one in Leeds colours, the other Villa).

Villa add to Leeds woe - Stephen Bierley

Copy from Football Unlimited of 10/04/2000.

A long, stressful and highly emotional week for Leeds United ended with a fifth successive defeat yesterday. Ordinarily this might have been construed as further evidence that David O'Leary's young side were continuing to finish the season with the fuel gauge flickering on empty, but the dreadful happenings in Turkey surely absolved them of even a hint of criticism here.

Indeed Leeds had enough chances to have at least drawn, with their manager describing Villa's goal as "disgraceful" when Gary Kelly, ahead of Julian Joachim, sprawled to the ground to leave the striker a clear run at goal.

O'Leary clearly believed Kelly had been fouled, whereas to the neutral observer, to say nothing of Villa's fans, any contact between Kelly and Joachim appeared unintentional. The fact was that Kelly or Jonathan Woodgate should have shepherded Lee Hendrie's long ball away, but they allowed Joachim in between them.
