Jabba's Comments

Mel Sterland had been one of the stalwarts of Wilko's Sheffield Wednesday side in the 1980s after making his debut under Jack Charlton in 1979. 1989 was quite an eventful year for him: he won his only England cap in a friendly against Saudi Arabia, he moved up to Glasgow Rangers after 10 years at Hillsborough, and shortly after that he became one of Wilko's summer signings as he put together a Leeds side to climb out of Division 2. "Zico" Sterland had a powerful free kick and produced some great crosses, and although some of the pacier wingers managed to get past him on occasion, he made full use of his experience and bulk to ensure that didn't happen too often. An ankle injury caused him several problems and - despite several operations - his professional career came to an end in 1994. He went on to be player/manager with non-league Boston United.

Peter Russell says: I am trying to establish if Mel Sterland is descended from the Sterlands of Chesterfield and, in particular, from Henry Sterland and Sarah Scott. Currently, I am researching the lives of the 40 Englishmen who were in the celebrated 7th United States Cavalry at the time of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. A Walter Scott Sterland, from Chesterfield, survived the battle and died in North Dakota, USA, in 1922. Any information would be very much appreciated.
